Calvert Hospice is offering a free, 7-week course to help grieving persons integrate loss into life in healthy ways. This class provides an opportunity for sharing and learning around a common theme, “Understanding Your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart.”   Pre-registration is required to attend this series of group sessions. On February 7,  local historian Pete Himmelheber will offer a free lecture on what may be Maryland's oldest continually used thoroughfare,  Mattapany Road.  The talk will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Historic St. Mary’s City Visitor Center auditorium (18751Hogaboom Lane).   Himmelheber will share his research about the origin of the road’s name and its evolution -- the paths it has taken and the development that stood along its shoulders.  Historic St.  Mary’s City is a museum of living history and archaeology on the site of Maryland’s first capital in beautiful, tidewater Southern Maryland.  For more information about this program or the museum, contact the Visitor Center at 240-895-4990, 800-SMC-1634, or info@stmaryscity.org.

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), is accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2013 capital grants under the MHT Historic Preservation Grant Program. The purpose of this capital projects program is to assist and encourage efforts to acquire and preserve historic properties. In this funding cycle, grants will only be awarded to assist properties on which MHT already holds a preservation easement recorded in the local land records on or before the application postmark deadline of February 15, 2013. Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Maryland invites you to attend our annual meeting at the Leonardtown Library on Saturday, February 16Th at 10 am. There will be a silent auction and refreshments will be served before the meeting. Volunteers are always needed to help rescued Golden's, especially foster families. Foster families keep a foster dog in their home until a permanent home is found. Test your skills while playing basketball with the best Charles County has to offer. This basketball league is designed to allow middle school students who have dreams of playing high school basketball an opportunity to play against their peers. Players can only play at the middle school community center that they currently attend. Students attending private school must play for the center in their appropriate school zone. This program is open to all students in grades 6 through 8 for the 2012-2013 school year.  Divisions are 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys; as well as 6th-8th grade girls.  Practice is estimated to start the week of March 11. The event benefits United Way of Charles County and Spring Dell Center equally, and is a great way to get started shaping up for the summer! Everyone is welcome to come and ride all of or a portion of the 26 mile, scenic Rail Trail. Inline skaters are welcome! This year the event will kick off at the Village Green Pavilion, 100 Walter Thomas Road, Indian Head, MD with check-in at 9:00 a.m. and a flex-start time of 10:00 a.m. Registration forms are now available to download from the United Way of Charles County web site Special Events tab, www.unitedwaycharles.org or calling (301) 609-4844 to have one mailed to you. SATURDAY MARCH 16 – ST PATRICK’S DAY DINNER/DANCE.  Put on the Green and come to THE place to celebrate St Paddy’s Day,  in the upper level of the American Legion Post on Route 260 in Chesapeake Beach.  Traditional dinner of Ham, Corned Beef, Cabbage, Boiled Potatoes, sides, soft beverages, and draft beer.  Cash bar available.   Dinner will be served from 6:30 p.m. and dancing to the tunes of 2-4-U will begin at 8:00.  Tickets may be purchased from the Legion Bartender. On Saturday, April 6, 2013, we'll be hosting our 6th Annual We're Looking for Trouble 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Run! Kids' Fun Run starts at 8:45 AM 5K starts at 9:00 AM. The race will follow the Three Notch Trail and will begin and end at the Northern Senior Center. The Northern Senior Center is located at 29655 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. NAS Patuxent River Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) will host the 2nd Annual Spring Fling Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the NAS Patuxent River Drill Hall, building 458 of off Keane Road. The craft fair showcases hand-made original items from Military and Civilian DoD and their guests. More than 125 vendors will participate this year. This event is free and open to the public. Anyone wishing to attend but does not have base access may park at the Frank Knox Building, building 2189 off of Route 235 in Lexington Park (just south of NAS Patuxent River's Gate 2.) The Hollywood Rescue Squad is sponsoring a cruise aboard the Grandeur of the Seas from Baltimore for a 6-night Bermuda cruise (September 27 to October 3, 2013).  The ship will dock in Kings Wharf, Bermuda on September 29th and depart on October 1st giving you time to sightsee.  Cruise rates are based on double occupancy:  Inside Cabin is $891 per person; Ocean View Cabin is $971 per person; and a Balcony Cabin is $1,371 per person.  A deposit of $250.00 per person reserves your cabin.    Roundtrip motor-coach from St. Mary’s County, port charges, taxes, fees, prepaid gratuities and a donation to the Hollywood Rescue Squad are included in the rates.  Valid passports are required for this cruise.  For further information, please contact Marcie at 301-472-4552.
